Mastering the Art of Teaching to Help Online Students Learn Faster

A lot of people love online learning because it is a fluid method that works well for most people’s schedule from school students who want to learn something extra to busy executives who can never predict their free time. If you are looking to start your online course to accommodate such people and are feeling inadequate, perhaps you need to develop various skills to improve teaching? You don’t have to worry and get overwhelmed by your what-ifs. You can start mastering the art of teaching by applying these necessary steps.

Start conversation lightly

When it is your first time to meet your student through video call, try to be natural as much as possible. It is fine not to jump instantly to the lesson you prepared. After introducing yourselves to one another, you can go on with a little chitchat by asking how the student’s day went or talking about a trendy topic connected to your lesson. Do not do all the talking. Make way for a two-way communication. Encourage your student to express his or her thoughts and feelings by asking questions such as close-ended and open-ended questions. This can establish a good connection with your student and make a good learning foundation.

Show enthusiasm

Why is enthusiasm essential? The answer is simple, it arouses the interest of your students. Imagine hearing a person talking with you blandly, would you have fun to continue the conversation or would you rather find ways to exit? Enthusiasm also helps students focus on what you say. You should have good conviction to what you teach. So, how can you teach with good conviction? You should familiarize your material beforehand. Understand it fully, and think how you can deliver it to your students effectively.

Use language your student understands

It is necessary to understand the students’ level of fluency in the language you teach. This will help you pick the right words which your student understands. Teachers should not just aim to just get by or merely deliver the lessons for the day but find ways to reach the students’ mind and heart. When you are teaching English to a non-native speaker, try to use simple and concise words or phrases which they easily understand.

Use visual aids

Visual aids are not only for grade school students, it is effective for grown-up students as well. When you are discussing complex ideas, use pictures or graphs to help the students visualize in mind and make photographic memory. You can send images through the chat box, or by showing printed visuals through the web cam. This will help them better remember the lessons.

Create reviews and give genuine opinion to your students

To know whether your student truly comprehend the topics you’ve taught, prepare review questions beforehand. This will test your students’ capabilities. If you think that your student needs to adjust, or improve in some matters regarding your lesson, tell them directly in a subtle way. If your student did an excellent job, give genuine compliment.

Study your teaching materials

Even though you have taught the material several times before, it is still essential to review it or update the content of before giving the lecture. The material might have new key points that you have to accept. Studying your teaching material could also help you to come up with new teaching techniques that you could use in your classes.
